The Magnolia Building was designed by the architectural firm of Sanguinet & Staats and was constructed by the Magnolia Petroleum Company (now ExxonMobil) as headquarters for its subsidiaries. The building's name was derived from the Magnolia brand of gasoline and oil products sold by the company. The building's original owner was the American Life Insurance Company, which occupied the top floors.
The Magnolia Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and is a contributing property to the Harwood Historic District, a Dallas Landmark District. The building underwent a major renovation in 2000, which converted the upper floors into luxury apartments and the lower floors into a boutique hotel known as the Magnolia Hotel Dallas.
Standing 34 stories tall, the Magnolia Building is one of the most recognizable buildings in Dallas. Its unique Art Deco style architecture and its location in the heart of downtown make it a popular tourist destination. Visitors to the Magnolia Building can enjoy views of the city from the top of the building, or take a tour of the hotel to learn about the building's history.
